Wednesday Sports Update – Nats Take World Series Game 1

(Houston, TX) — The Washington Nationals are drawing first blood in the World Series. They beat the Astros 5-4 in Game One of the Fall Classic in Houston. Juan Soto went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI for the Nats, who scored three times in the fifth to snap a 2-all tie. Max Scherzer gave up two runs in the first, but settled down to get through five and get the win. Sean Doolittle got the final four outs for the save. Gerrit Cole gave up all five runs in seven frames to take the loss. George Springer homered and knocked in two for Houston, which hosts Game Two on Wednesday.

Astros Turn To Verlander Tonight

(Houston, TX) — The Astros will start Justin Verlander tonight against the Nationals as they try to even the World Series at Minute Maid Park. Verlander went 21-and-6 with a 2.58 ERA in the regular season. Washington will counter with Stephen Strasburg, who has a 1.10 career playoff ERA. The Series will shift Friday to Washington with Zack Greinke starting for Houston.

Jones Optimistic Cooper Will Remain With Dallas

(Dallas, TX) — Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said on a Metro-Plex radio station he has no reason to think Amari Cooper wouldn’t finish his career with Dallas. Jones made the comments on the one-year anniversary of acquiring Cooper in a trade with the Raiders. The Pro Bowl receiver has 38 receptions for 621 yards and five touchdowns and is eligible for free agency after the season. The Cowboys are off this week.

Texans Will Host Raiders Sunday

(Houston, TX) — The Texans return to the practice field today to start preparing for a Sunday home game with the Raiders. Houston is 4-and-3 coming off a 30-23 loss in Indianapolis. Oakland is 3-and-3. The Texans cut tight end Logan Paulsen and signed tight end Jerell Adams to the practice squad.

Clippers Top Lakers, Raptors Down Pelicans As NBA Season Begins

(Undated) — The NBA regular season is underway. The league tipped off the new campaign with a pair of games last night. Kawhi Leonard scored 30 points to lead the Clippers past the Lakers 112-102 in LA. Earlier in the night, the defending champion Raptors got their rings and raised their banner before outlasting the Pelicans 130-122 in overtime in Toronto.

Mavericks Tip Off Season Tonight

(Dallas, TX) — The Mavericks tip off the season tonight at home against the Washington Wizards. Dallas has high expectations of returning to the playoffs after a three-year drought. The pairing of reigning rookie of the year Luka Doncic and a healthy Kristaps Porzingis fuel the optimism. Dallas went 33-and-49 last season with only the Suns having a worst record in the West.

Rockets Tip Off Season Tomorrow

(Houston, TX) — The Rockets tip off their season tomorrow night against the Milwaukee Bucks in Houston. The Rockets finished last season 53-and-29 and third in the Western Conference. They acquired former NBA MVP Russell Westbrook in a trade with the Thunder in July to pair with James Harden, another former league MVP.

Stars Try To Extend Winning Streak Tomorrow

(Dallas, TX) — The Stars will try to extend their winning streak to three games tomorrow night when they host the Anaheim Ducks. Dallas defeated Ottawa and Philadelphia in its last two to improve to 3-7-and-1. In other news, Goalie Ben Bishop and center Tyler Seguin suffered significant property damage from a tornado that struck the Dallas area on Sunday night.

Big 12 Releases 2020 Football Schedule

(Irving, TX) — The Big 12 released its conference schedule for next year and it’s highlighted by the conference championship game on December 5th at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. The Texas and Oklahoma game is October 10th in Dallas. Baylor will host Kansas on September 12th, a rare early conference opener. TCU will host Oklahoma State on October 3rd in its first conference game.

College Football Round Up

(Undated) — In area college football, tomorrow night number-17 and unbeaten SMU will play in Houston in an AAC contest. On Saturday, number-15 Texas will be at TCU, Texas A&M will host Mississippi State, North Texas Mean Green will be at Charlotte and Texas Tech will go to Kansas. West Texas A&M will be in Portales to take on Eastern New Mexico. Number-14 Baylor is off before hosting West Virginia on Halloween night.
