Potter County SO and DPS to be on Extra Patrol for School Buses

The Potter County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety are gearing up to address the ever-growing problem of vehicles passing stopped school buses.

By law, drivers should stop their vehicles when approaching a school bus that has stopped to drop off or pick up children.

Drivers who are approaching a stopped bus on the other side of the highway do not have to stop if they are separated by a median or concrete barrier.

If there is no median or barrier those drivers should stop aswell.

During the school year, over 42,000 school buses transport 1.5 million students across the state.

Failure to stop for a school bus can result in a fine no less than $500 and up to $1,200.

Starting next week officers will be on extra patrol looking for drivers who do not stop for buses.
