Monday Sports Update – Cowboys Announce Garrett’s Departure

(Frisco, TX) — Jason Garrett is out as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Owner Jerry Jones released a statement on Sunday thanking Garrett for more than 20 years of service as a player, assistant coach and head coach. Multiple outlets reported earlier Sunday Garrett was informed he would not be back in 2020. His contract expires January 14th. The news comes after the Cowboys reportedly interviewed Marvin Lewis and Mike McCarthy over the weekend. Garrett went 85-and-67 during his tenure in Dallas, but had just two playoff wins and three playoff appearances. The Cowboys finished 8-and-8 this season after starting 3-and-0.

NFL Wild Card Roundup

(Undated) — Wild Card Weekend is over and three teams who played on the road are moving to the next round. The Vikings stunned the Saints 26-20 in overtime in New Orleans and the Seahawks knocked off the Eagles 17-9 in Philadelphia yesterday. On Saturday, the Titans upset the Patriots 20-13 in Foxboro, while the Texans held on to edge the Bills 22-19 in overtime. In the Division Round this weekend, Minnesota visits San Francisco, Baltimore hosts Tennessee and Green Bay welcomes Seattle.

Texans Will Meet Chiefs Sunday

(Houston, TX) — The Texans will meet the Chiefs Sunday in Kansas City in the NFL post-season Divisional Round. Houston advanced with a 22-19 overtime victory Saturday over Buffalo. The Texas whipped the Chiefs 31-24 on October 13th in Kansas City. If they win again, they will be in the AFC Championship game the next Sunday.

Rhule Is Wanted Man In NFL

(Undated) — Baylor head football coach Matt Rhule has interviews scheduled today with the Carolina Panthers and tomorrow with the New York Giants. Both NFL teams are looking for a head coach. Rhule guided Baylor to a Sugar Bowl berth and an 11-3 record last season after the Bears went 1-and-11 in his first season in 2017. He was a Giants’ assistant coach in 2012.

Mavs Home Tonight Against Bulls

(Dallas, TX) — The Mavericks are home tonight against the Chicago Bulls. Luka Doncic had a triple-double — 39 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists — on Saturday, but Dallas lost 123-120 in overtime to Charlotte. The Mavs will remain home Wednesday to face the Nuggets.

Rockets Go On Road Wednesday

(Houston, TX) — The Rockets will play their next two on the road, starting Wednesday with the Hawks in Atlanta. They will play Thursday in Oklahoma City before returning home on Saturday against the Timberwolves. Houston has won two in a row and three of four for a Southwest Division-leading 24-and 11 record.

Stars Will Return To Ice Wednesday

(Los Angeles, CA) — The Stars will try to stretch their winning streak to five games when they open a four-trip Wednesday at the Los Angeles Kings. They will play the Ducks Thursday in Anaheim before concluding the trip with games at San Jose and Colorado before returning January 16th to Dallas.

Sentry Tournament Of Champions

KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) – Justin Thomas won a tournament he thought he threw away Sunday with a superb wedge to 3 feet for birdie on the third playoff hole at Kapalua to beat Patrick Reed and win the Sentry Tournament of Champions for the second time. Ryan Palmer finished in a tie for 17th at 3-under.

Baylor Faces Demanding Basketball Week

(Waco, TX) — Fourth-ranked Baylor will face a taxing week on the basketball court. The Bears, who beat Texas 59-44 Saturday to open Big 12 play, will face number-22 Texas Tech tomorrow night in Lubbock. The Red Raiders played in the national championship game last season. On Saturday, Baylor will play at number-three Kansas. Baylor head coach Scott Drew is 0-and-12 at Allen Fieldhouse.

College Basketball Roundup

(Undated) — In other area college basketball, tonight UT-Arlington will host South Alabama. Tomorrow night TCU will play at Kansas State in Big 12 action, while Texas A&M is home against Mississippi. Wednesday, SMU will host UCF after winning 92-81 on Saturday at Vanderbilt. The Mustangs are 11-and-2. Oklahoma will play at rival Texas. Thursday, North Texas will host Florida International.
