APD Partnering With Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive For New Network

The Amarillo Police Department is teaming up with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive to implement the new National Integrated Ballistics Information Network.

The network is a specialized computer network that allows law enforcement agencies to enter images of ballistic evidence collected from shooting incidents and compares them against other images acquired locally and nationwide.

Department received a grant of approximately $154,000 to purchase the hardware needed to join the network.

Having the terminal at the Police Department will allow them to identify weapons and suspects involved in shooting incidents much more quickly than the department was capable of doing previously.
